Where it all began:
Getting my first design experience in broadcast design at a non-union shop was the perfect, unplanned, start. My broadcast design career spanned 16 years, first at CNN Headline News and then at CNN. I started as a video journalist (V.J.) and worked my way up to a Senior Broadcast Designer. It was a really rare opportunity to be on the ground floor of a start up company that revolutionized the broadcast industry.
It was a privilege to walk the floor with the likes of Ted Turner and Ted Kavanau, and Art Directors Fran Heaney and Ann Williams. These fearless leaders were teaching us as they broke new ground. As we became more established, Art Director Mark Wright led us through new technology changes while highlighting each artist’s individual talents. Here are a few examples of some of the work I did while there. We’ll start with stills from animated opens, move onto daily news graphics, award shows and finally, an award and much appreciated recognition on my 15th anniversary. My husband David requested that from “Uncle Ted” himself (that’s what many of his original employees affectionately called him) as David planned a surprise 15th anniversary party for me. I stayed one more year before moving to California and retraining in web design, back when much of it was writing and editing code.
